About Temple

Perunna Subrahmanya Swami temple is a Hindu temple located in Changanacherry. The deity of the temple is Murugan one of the three sons of Lord Shiva. This is the first temple in Kerala which was opened to all Hindus, as per the order of Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma of Travancore kingdom. Hearing this incident Mohandas Gandhi during his first visit to Kerala came to the temple and worshipped the Muruga for days. A grand ceremony and meeting were conducted at the east gate of the temple then.
In the temple, the furious form of Murugan is worshipped. The Vel is pointed downwards. Murugan is worshipped here in the form of Devasenapathi, the supreme general of the holy forces. The deity is in an angry and furious mood as he had just killed Tharakasuran. He is in a very angry mood as he had just killed Tharakasuran. He faces east as seen in most of the temples, and this is the only temple with a furious form. Mahaganapathi, Krishna, Shiva and serpent deities are the other deities.
About five hundred years ago, there was a village called Umpizhi near Perunna. But if the villagers of Perunna were perfect sattviks, the villagers of Umpizhi were sorcerers and evil. The Keezhkulangara Mahadeva Temple, located on the eastern side of the present day Subramanyaswamy Temple, was the village temple of the Perunna villagers of Saiva. The Umpizhikars were not the least bit jealous of the fact that the Perunnas became powerful due to the blessings of Lord Shiva. They did a lot of bad things against Perunna. However, with the blessings of Lord Keezhkulangara, the Perunnas survived such tragedies. This provoked the spit again. They attacked and destroyed the Keezhkulangara temple. However, the Shiva lingam miraculously escaped. The people of Perunna became saddened by this, and when they looked into the matter, they realized the need for a temple of Subramanyaswamy and sought a way to please Subramanyaswamy. As evidenced by the problem, Namboothiri, a homeless man from the west, went to the famous Palani Dandayudhapani temple and performed bhajan and on the last day of the bhajan, Subramanyaswamy gave him a dream vision.
In a dream, Subramanyaswamy said that there was an idol of his that was worshiped by the Maharishis at Achankovilat, which flows near his temple at Kodunthara near Pathanamthitta, and that he should bring it and place it in Perunna. After this vision, Namboothiri returned home to Koduntara with a few helpers, found the idol from Achankovilat and proceeded to Perunna in celebration.
By the time of the dedication day, the villagers of Umpizhi were beginning to smell defeat. As a last resort, they appeased an evil goddess and told her to destroy the temple. Realizing this, Idamana Namboothiri immediately set out for the village of Umbizhi and made an intense appeal to bury the evil goddess and protect the temple. A Nair official who was a close friend of Namboothiri sacrificed his life to Durdevata. This saddened Namboothiri but he completed the deeds without any error and the village of Umbizhi was completely destroyed. Namboothiri later added the goddess he had invoked to an idol of Bhadrakali and installed it in a new temple. This temple is now known as Maranathukavu. Thus the Perunna village and the temple began to shine with pride.
