The story goes that the Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvathy revealed themselves to a fervent devotee at this place. It is said that years & years back two old brahmins, on their way to Kashi passed through this place(Anicadu). It was a dense forest during that time. They saw a diseased cow on their way. One of the brahmins decided to take care of the cow to recover it from the critical condition while his friend continued his journey to Kashi. With his sincere & dedicated attention, the cow recovered from the disease. He was very happy and content about the fact that he could save the life of the cow, but at the same time felt sad about his incomplete pilgrimage to Kashi. While sitting near the cow with all these thoughts, Lord Shiva & Godess Parvathy revealed themselves before him and said:- “ You need not worry about your incomplete pilgrimage to Kashi. You have performed a great sacrifice by saving the life of a being, for which we are very much pleased with you. In fact, it was godess Shri Parvathy who came before you as a cow to see how devoted you are! You can see the cow’s hoof(Kulambu) mark over the surface of the rock and the holy water flow through the same, where you have performed this great sacrifice. This holy water is the great “Kashi Theertham” and you can perform all the rituals here itself and it will be considered as good as doing it at Kashi.” With those words, Lord Shiva & Parvathy disappeared. He performed the rituals in the Kashi theertham(Divine water from Kashi) flowing through the “Thiru Kulambu” (Holy hoof )there itself as advised by Lord and got the ultimate state of “Yogeshwaran”. The Theerthakkulam (Pond) at the north side of the temple contains this holy water flowing through the “Thirukulambu” and lot of people perform their “Pithru Tharppan” rituals at this place. Thus, the name Thiruvumplavil is formed from “Thirukulambai” as above. History Of Thiruvumplavil Mahadeva Temple As per the available records, the first renovation project was carried out in 1119(Kollavarsham). The renovation activities were led by Late Vasudevan Elayathu, Anickattillom. Sreekovil, Valiyambalam, Thidappilli, Balikkalpura etc. were constructed and the Dravya Kalasham was conducted on 21st Medam 1121. Later in 1130, Gopuram, Office building, Theerdhakkulam were constructed. Necessary developments were made in the day to day pooja in consultation and with the advise of Temple’s Thanthri. In 1994, Gopuram was constructed at the South Gate of the temple. In 1995, the ‘Devaprashna Parihaara Kriyakal’ were carried out in the leadership of Brahmasree Manayattattu Vasudevan Nampoothiri & Bhagavathahamsam Brahmasree Malliyoor Shankaran Nampoothiri. During the period from 1996 to 2000 a lot of renovation activities including Sreekovil, Chuttambalam, Upadevatha puna-prathishta, Chuttuvilakku, Balikkal prathishta, Dravyakalasham etc were carried out. In 2001, Theerthakkulam was developed further together with Baliththara for the convenience of devotees who come here to do the Pithru Tharppan. Conceiving this great concept, NAKSHATRA VANAM project aims to develop a garden with the plants and trees corresponding to the 27 stars. Also there will be other plants with medicinal value. NAKSHATRA VANAM is being developed at the most appropriate location at the north side of the temple(Theerthakkara) where the Kashi theertam flows through Thirukulambu. Devotees can participate in this project either by sponsoring the tree corresponding to their Star(Booking Completed for this option) or by contributing for the preservation of the same. The temple pond on the northern side is known as theerthakkulam where the legendary Thirukulambu with Kaashitheertham flows. Devotees can purify themselves by taking bath here and can enter the temple. Facility for pithru tharppanam(Bali Idal) is available all the days. Devotees who come for pithru tharppan should visit the temple only after completion of the pithru tharppan at theerthakkara. Follow the temple rules and regulations, so that all can comfortably worship the Lord. Do not enter the temple wearing shirt, baniyan, lungi, chappals etc. 7 days after menstrual periods for ladies are forbidden for temple visit. Do not take video camera, mobile phone etc. inside the temple wall. Immediately after marriage , the couples should not enter the Nalambalam. Do not spit in the temple premises. Do not retain babies and children for a long time within the Nalambalam. The receipt for the remittance for offerings (Vazhipad) can be obtained from the booking counters. ശിവൻ പാർവതി ദേവിയോടൊപ്പം ഈ സ്ഥലത്ത് ഒരു തീക്ഷ്ണ ഭക്തന് സ്വയം വെളിപ്പെടുത്തിയതായി കഥ പറയുന്നു. വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുമുമ്പ് രണ്ട് പഴയ ബ്രാഹ്മണർ കാശിയിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്രാമധ്യേ ഈ സ്ഥലം (ആനിക്കാട്) കടന്നുപോയതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. നിബിഡ വനമായിരുന്നു അക്കാലത്ത്. വഴിയിൽ രോഗം ബാധിച്ച ഒരു പശുവിനെ അവർ കണ്ടു. സുഹൃത്ത് കാശിയിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്ര തുടരുന്നതിനിടയിൽ ബ്രാഹ്മണരിൽ ഒരാൾ പശുവിനെ അത്യാസന്നനിലയിൽ നിന്ന് വീണ്ടെടുക്കാൻ പരിപാലിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആത്മാർത്ഥവും അർപ്പണബോധവുമുള്ള ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ പശു രോഗത്തിൽ നിന്ന് കരകയറി. പശുവിന്റെ ജീവൻ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞതിൽ അദ്ദേഹം വളരെ സന്തോഷവാനും സംതൃപ്തനുമായിരുന്നു, എന്നാൽ അതേ സമയം കാശിയിലേക്കുള്ള തന്റെ അപൂർണ്ണമായ തീർത്ഥാടനത്തിൽ സങ്കടവും തോന്നി. ഈ ചിന്തകളോടെ പശുവിന്റെ അടുത്ത് ഇരിക്കുമ്പോൾ, പരമശിവനും പാർവ്വതിയും അവന്റെ മുമ്പിൽ സ്വയം വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി പറഞ്ഞു:- “നിങ്ങളുടെ കാശിയിലേക്കുള്ള തീർഥാടനത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് നിങ്ങൾ വിഷമിക്കേണ്ടതില്ല. ഒരു ജീവിയുടെ ജീവൻ രക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് നിങ്ങൾ ഒരു മഹത്തായ ത്യാഗം ചെയ്തു, അതിന് ഞങ്ങൾ നിങ്ങളോട് വളരെ സന്തുഷ്ടരാണ്. സത്യത്തിൽ, നിങ്ങൾ എത്രമാത്രം ഭക്തിയുള്ളവരാണെന്ന് കാണാൻ ഒരു പശുവായി നിങ്ങളുടെ മുൻപിൽ വന്നത് ശ്രീ പാർവതി ദേവിയാണ്! നിങ്ങൾ ഈ മഹായാഗം നടത്തിയ പാറയുടെ ഉപരിതലത്തിൽ പശുവിന്റെ കുളമ്പ് (കുളംബു) അടയാളവും അതിലൂടെ വിശുദ്ധജലം ഒഴുകുന്നതും നിങ്ങൾക്ക് കാണാം. ഈ പുണ്യജലം മഹത്തായ "കാശി തീർത്ഥം" ആണ്, നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ഇവിടെ തന്നെ എല്ലാ ആചാരങ്ങളും നടത്താം, അത് കാശിയിൽ ചെയ്യുന്നത് പോലെ നല്ലതായി കണക്കാക്കും. ആ വാക്കുകളോടെ ശിവനും പാർവതിയും അപ്രത്യക്ഷരായി. ഭഗവാന്റെ ഉപദേശപ്രകാരം കാശി തീർത്ഥത്തിൽ (കാശിയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ദിവ്യജലം) "തിരു കുളമ്പു" (വിശുദ്ധ കുളമ്പ്) ഒഴുകുന്ന ചടങ്ങുകൾ അവിടെത്തന്നെ നടത്തുകയും "യോഗേശ്വരൻ" എന്ന പരമമായ അവസ്ഥ ലഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ വടക്കുഭാഗത്തുള്ള തീർത്ഥക്കുളത്തിൽ (കുളം) "തിരുക്കുളമ്പിലൂടെ" ഒഴുകുന്ന ഈ പുണ്യജലം അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു, ധാരാളം ആളുകൾ ഈ സ്ഥലത്ത് അവരുടെ "പിതൃ തർപ്പൻ" ചടങ്ങുകൾ നടത്തുന്നു.
അങ്ങനെ തിരുവുംപ്ലാവ് എന്ന പേര് മേൽപ്പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ "തിരുകുലംബൈ"യിൽ നിന്നാണ് രൂപപ്പെട്ടത്. തിരുവുംപ്ലാവിൽ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം ലഭ്യമായ രേഖകളനുസരിച്ച് 1119-ൽ (കൊല്ലവർഷം) ആദ്യത്തെ നവീകരണ പദ്ധതി നടത്തി. ആനിക്കാട്ടില്ലം എളയത്ത് പരേതനായ വാസുദേവൻ എന്നിവരുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലായിരുന്നു നവീകരണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ. ശ്രീകോവിൽ, വലിയമ്പലം, തിടപ്പിള്ളി, ബലിക്കൽപുര തുടങ്ങിയവ നിർമ്മിച്ച് 1121 മേടം 21-ന് ദ്രവ്യകലശം നടത്തി.പിന്നീട് 1130-ൽ ഗോപുരം, ഓഫീസ് കെട്ടിടം, തീർഥക്കുളം എന്നിവ നിർമ്മിച്ചു. ക്ഷേത്രം തന്ത്രിയുടെ ഉപദേശത്തോടെയും കൂടിയാലോചനയിലും ദൈനംദിന പൂജയിൽ ആവശ്യമായ വികസനങ്ങൾ നടത്തി. 1994-ൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ തെക്കേ ഗോപുരത്തിൽ ഗോപുരം പണിതു. 1995-ൽ ബ്രഹ്മശ്രീ മനയത്താട്ട് വാസുദേവൻ നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെയും ഭാഗവതഹംസം ബ്രഹ്മശ്രീ മള്ളിയൂർ ശങ്കരൻ നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെയും നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ദേവപ്രശ്ന പരിഹാര ക്രിയകൾ നടന്നു. 1996 മുതൽ 2000 വരെയുള്ള കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ശ്രീകോവിൽ, ചുറ്റമ്പലം, ഉപദേവതാ പുനപ്രതിഷ്ഠ, ചുറ്റുവിളക്ക്, ബലിക്കൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ, ദ്രവ്യകലശം തുടങ്ങി ഒട്ടേറെ നവീകരണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നടത്തി. 2001-ൽ പിതൃതർപ്പണത്തിനെത്തുന്ന ഭക്തരുടെ സൗകര്യാർത്ഥം ബലിത്തറയുമായി ചേർന്ന് തീർത്ഥക്കുളം കൂടുതൽ വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്തു. കേരളത്തിലെ എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിൽ മൂവാറ്റുപുഴയ്ക്കടുത്തുള്ള ഗ്രാമമായ ആനിക്കാട് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ശിവക്ഷേത്രമാണ് തിരുവുംപ്ലാവിൽ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം. *നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്ന സമയങ്ങൾ ഏകദേശമാണ്. സൂര്യാസ്തമയ സമയത്തിലെ വ്യത്യാസങ്ങൾക്കനുസരിച്ച് ഇത് വ്യത്യാസപ്പെടാം, ചില പ്രത്യേക അവസരങ്ങളിൽ വിശേഷാൽ പൂജകൾ ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ 1 നിർമാല്യം 5.30am 2 ശംഖാഭിഷേകം, മലരുനിവേദ്യം 5.35am 3 ഗണപതിഹവനം 6.00am 4 എതിരേറ്റുപൂജ 7.00am 5 ധാര 9.30 ഉച്ചക്ക് 10.00 ന് 10.00 ന് 10.00 ന് ഉച്ചക്ക് 7.30 ന്. വൈകുന്നേരം 5.30 ന് 8 ദീപാരാധന 6.30 9 അത്താഴപൂജ 7.30 പ്രകൃതിയെ സർഗ്ഗാത്മകവും സംരക്ഷകവുമായ ശക്തിയായി അംഗീകരിക്കുന്ന ഭാരതീയ മനസ്സാക്ഷിയെ വിശദീകരിക്കുന്ന നിരവധി പരാമർശങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ആഴത്തിൽ വേരൂന്നിയ ചരിത്രപരമായ വൃക്ഷാരാധന, ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സാമൂഹിക മതജീവിതത്തിന്റെ പൊതു സവിശേഷതയാണ്. ഈ മഹത്തായ സങ്കൽപം വിഭാവനം ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ട്, 27 നക്ഷത്രങ്ങൾക്ക് അനുയോജ്യമായ ചെടികളും മരങ്ങളും ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന ഒരു പൂന്തോട്ടം വികസിപ്പിക്കാൻ നക്ഷത്ര വനം പദ്ധതി ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നു. കൂടാതെ ഔഷധമൂല്യമുള്ള മറ്റു ചെടികളും ഉണ്ടാകും. കാശി തീർത്ഥം തിരുക്കുളമ്പു വഴി ഒഴുകുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ വടക്കുഭാഗത്ത് (തീർത്ഥക്കര) ഏറ്റവും അനുയോജ്യമായ സ്ഥലത്താണ് നക്ഷത്ര വനം വികസിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഭക്തർക്ക് അവരുടെ നക്ഷത്രത്തിന് അനുയോജ്യമായ വൃക്ഷം സ്പോൺസർ ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടോ (ഈ ഓപ്ഷനായി ബുക്കിംഗ് പൂർത്തിയായി) അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അതിന്റെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനായി സംഭാവന നൽകിയോ ഈ പദ്ധതിയിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാം. കാശിതീർത്ഥമുള്ള തിരുക്കുളം ഒഴുകുന്ന വടക്കുഭാഗത്തുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രക്കുളം തീർത്ഥക്കുളം എന്നാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഭക്തർക്ക് ഇവിടെ കുളിച്ച് ശുദ്ധിവരുത്തി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കാം. പിതൃ തർപ്പണത്തിനുള്ള സൗകര്യം (ബലി ഇടൽ) എല്ലാ ദിവസവും ലഭ്യമാണ്. പിതൃതർപ്പണത്തിനെത്തുന്ന ഭക്തർ തീർത്ഥക്കരയിലെ പിതൃതർപ്പണം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയതിന് ശേഷം മാത്രമേ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ദർശനം നടത്താവൂ. ക്ഷേത്ര നിയമങ്ങളും ചട്ടങ്ങളും പാലിക്കുക, അങ്ങനെ എല്ലാവർക്കും സുഖമായി ഭഗവാനെ ആരാധിക്കാം. ഷർട്ട്, ബനിയൻ, ലുങ്കി, ചപ്പൽ തുടങ്ങിയവ ധരിച്ച് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കരുത്. ആർത്തവം കഴിഞ്ഞ് 7 ദിവസം കഴിഞ്ഞ് സ്ത്രീകൾക്ക് ക്ഷേത്രദർശനം നിരോധിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രമതിൽക്കെട്ടിനുള്ളിൽ വീഡിയോ ക്യാമറ, മൊബൈൽ ഫോൺ തുടങ്ങിയവ കൊണ്ടുപോകരുത്. വിവാഹം കഴിഞ്ഞ ഉടനെ ദമ്പതികൾ നാലമ്പലത്തിൽ കയറരുത്. ക്ഷേത്ര പരിസരത്ത് തുപ്പരുത്. നാലമ്പലത്തിനുള്ളിൽ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെയും കുട്ടികളെയും ദീർഘനേരം നിർത്തരുത്. വഴിപാടുകൾക്കുള്ള പണം അയച്ചതിന്റെ രസീത് (വഴിപാട്) ബുക്കിംഗ് കൗണ്ടറുകളിൽ നിന്ന് ലഭിക്കും. തികഞ്ഞ ഭക്തി ബോധത്തോടെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കുക. തിരുക്കുളമ്പിലൂടെ പുണ്യജലം (കാശീതീർത്ഥം) ഒഴുകുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ വടക്കുഭാഗത്തുള്ള തീർത്ഥക്കരയിൽ ക്ഷേത്രസമയത്ത് എല്ലാ ദിവസവും പിതൃ തർപ്പണത്തിനുള്ള സൗകര്യം ഒരുക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. പ്രധാന പരിപാടികൾ • മഹാശിവരാത്രി • കലശവാർഷികം • കർക്കിടകവാവ് • വിനായക ചതുർത്ഥി • നവരാത്രി • മണ്ഡല ആചരണം • അഷ്ടമി ദർശനം • ശ്രീമദ് ഭാഗവത സപ്താഹം
